Transaction Details and Facility Capabilities

The Business Journal reported that the acquisition was financed through BMO Bank, with seller Richard Marx—one of Infinity EDM's co-founders—remaining with the company to assist with the transition. Marx told the publication he was looking to phase out of the business.

The Business Journal highlighted the company's purpose-built 30,600-square-foot facility, noting its thick flooring designed for EDM processes, large grinding machine, and 10-ton crane capacity—infrastructure specifically engineered for the demanding requirements of precision wire EDM work.

What the Press Highlighted About Infinity

Both publications emphasized several key aspects of Infinity EDM that make the company distinctive:

Unmatched Capacity: BizTimes noted that Infinity EDM operates wire EDM machines and specifically called out the company's ability to "handle very large components with its wire EDM machines, which are 'exceptionally accurate.'" The Business Journal described the company as specializing in "large form factor wire electrical discharge machining" with "unique capabilities."

Strategic Differentiation: Both publications quoted Crum explaining why Infinity attracted his interest. "One of the reasons we were really excited about Infinity is they have differentiation in very large form factor wire EDM," he told BizTimes. "Those types of businesses tend to be less cyclical."

To the Business Journal, Crum added: "What excites me is the combination of heavy industry and showing how you can release individuals from repetitive work. You can show labor and automation can go hand in hand."

Diverse Customer Base: The Business Journal reported that Infinity's customers span multiple industries including medical, defense, automotive, automation, municipal government, and oil and gas.

Comprehensive Services: Both articles noted that beyond wire EDM, the company provides CNC machining, small hole drilling, and surface grinding services, positioning Infinity as a full-service precision manufacturing partner.

Strong Team: The publications reported that Infinity EDM currently has 26 employees, highlighting the company's substantial workforce and operational capacity.

New Leadership Credentials Make Headlines

Both publications devoted considerable attention to Crum's background, which brings significant manufacturing and technology expertise to Infinity EDM:

  • Rockwell Automation Leadership: The Business Journal reported that Crum "worked at Milwaukee-based Rockwell Automation for more than seven years," with his most recent position as director of advanced technology. BizTimes identified him as "director of advanced technology" who "led a research team focused on industrial automation."
  • Naval Service: Both publications highlighted his design engineering role within the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and his eight years of Navy service.
  • Manufacturing Innovation: BizTimes featured his experience "running an innovation group for Pittsburgh-based Alcoa" where "he worked with nonferrous metallics."
  • Educational Background: Crum holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a certificate in management of technology from MIT Professional Education.

Focus on Continuity and Growth

In discussing his approach to ownership, Crum shared with BizTimes his immediate priorities: "Right now, it's about building trust and stabilization. I'm a new owner. After being in the Navy for eight years, I learned the first thing you do is seek to understand before you seek to be understood."

The Business Journal noted that while "company growth and finding efficiencies are always back of mind, Crum said he's currently focused on learning the ins and outs of the business and gaining feedback and support from employees."

BizTimes reported that Crum said "(Infinity) was a great fit in terms of it being a small manufacturing services company. I get to apply all that knowledge around design and metallics, and potentially automation, in practice."

Earlier Coverage: Wisconsin Technology Council

Prior to the acquisition announcement, the Wisconsin Technology Council featured coverage in June about Crum's departure from Rockwell Automation and his plans to enter manufacturing entrepreneurship and venture capital, setting the stage for the October acquisition news.

Recognition of Infinity's Market Position

The media coverage from multiple respected business publications validates Infinity's position as a significant player in the precision manufacturing sector. The attention from both BizTimes Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Business Journal – the region's premier sources for business news and analysis – underscores the strategic importance of both the company's specialized capabilities and the ownership transition.

The combination of Infinity's proven operational excellence, purpose-built facility, and diverse customer base with Crum's extensive background in advanced manufacturing, metallurgy, and automation positions the company for continued growth and innovation in precision manufacturing services.
